Environmentally Responsible

Good environmental and ethical practices are at the heart of our business.

Nick Hooper Design’s environmental impact is minimal, sustainable and small scale. Regardless of whether expenses are higher, we will always opt for the best environmental choice over the cheaper one.

Ecological inks

We use eco-friendly water based inks that produce long lasting prints without damaging our rivers or waterways.  Screens are washed in an old above ground “pool” with ordinary hosepipe. After any sediments settle, the water is gradually syphoned using sustainable drainage techniques (SUDS). Evidence of the health of our waste water comes from the insect larvae and their predators which thrive in the bath and barrels until the shrubs are watered!

Recycled packaging

All our postage packs are made from recycled materials with the larger sizes produced from Sugar Cane fibre. When you buy from us online we won’t be sending you any plastic. It is even delivered to the post office on bike by Lin!

Recycled paper

Hand screen-printing requires paper to capture the excess inks. We collect rolls from local newspaper printing outlets plus friends and relations donate their old newspapers for us to re-use.

This also gives Nick a chance to catch up on the news from 1999!

Plastic Free

Over 15 years ago our festival stall was one of the first to boycott the use of plastic bags. We continue to boycott plastic. Customers who ask for a bag have and will continue to receive a recycled brown paper bag.

When selecting a new product to compliment our handmade products, if it comes wrapped in plastic we simply don’t buy it or convey to the artisans we buy from our preference to give up the use of plastic.

Natural materials

Clothes used for printing are organic where possible and natural materials are always used. We were one of the first businesses to print on Hemp. Sadly, 10 years ago, our regular hemp producer ‘disappeared’ and alternative suppliers turned out to be large companies with minimum quantities of 1000 per size – beyond our budget and storage capacity. We are actively exploring the re-launch of our hemp range soon.
